Higher Apprentice Software Developer (level 4)

We are looking for an aspiring engineer with a hunger to learn and explore all aspects of software engineering. You will have an all-access pass to every inch of our business, including but not limited to, designing, installing, maintaining, and supporting our world-class, high-performance network.

A typical day as a software engineer would be:
• Developing new features to enhance our SaaS product using an up-to-date Microsoft technology stack (i.e. writing code, creating automated tests, performing reviews, resolving defects & releasing updates)
• Delivering high-quality software updates to our customers every two weeks (or sooner)
• Actively contributing in sprint planning meetings, daily stand-ups, end of sprint showcases and retrospectives
• Supporting your colleagues and working to achieve common team goals
• Building software based on the Agile principles and practices including Scrum, TDD, Continuous Integration and Continuous Delivery

During and on completion of your apprenticeship, you’ll…

• Take and interpret given software development requirements to estimate personal time and effort required to deliver the work product to enable accurate costs to be established
• Break software development activities down into logical units or work to enable sequencing and ensure the best possible structuring of activities to deliver a high-quality product right first time
• Report progress accurately throughout the development life cycle stages to ensure adequate audit trails of key work steps such that the organisation can demonstrate how the product has been created for quality and commercial purposes
• Identify and report any impediments to software development activities and propose practical solutions
• Convert customer requirements into technical requirements, both functional and non-functional to ensure that customers’ expectations are accurately reflected in the software products developed
• Identify and select the most appropriate technical solution, taking into consideration coding best practice and appropriate quality standards
• Communicate software development solutions to a range of internal or external stakeholders to ensure clear understanding of requirements and how they have been met or adjusted
• Undertake unit testing of solutions, with appropriate levels of test Knowledge Skills Behaviours code coverage, to identify and, where necessary, resolve issues
• Practice continuous self-learning to keep up to date with technological developments to enhance relevant skills and take responsibility for own professional development

We are looking for someone who…

• Must have 5 GCSE passes at grades 4 and above including English and Math
• Must have IT specific qualification at either A-level or Level 3 Apprenticeship, or other relevant qualifications (BTEC). STEM Subjects will be of benefit
• Has good communication skills
• Has a demonstrable passion for technology and development of software
• Learns and applies well to projects undertaken

• BSC Level 4 Diploma in Software Development Methodologies
• OCA Java SE 8 Programmer Certification

• Apprenticeship progression routes are also available to Learners with options like the Level 6 Digital and technology solutions professional (integrated degree)
