New York doctor convicted in $24 million Medicare fraud case
In February 2025, a New York doctor was found guilty by a federal jury for his involvement in a $24 million Medicare fraud scheme.
The doctor received thousands of dollars in illegal cash kickbacks and bribes in exchange for ordering medical tests and equipment. These orders were made without proper patient examinations, often involving individuals he had never met.
The doctor was found guilty on one count of conspiracy to commit healthcare fraud, six counts of healthcare fraud, and three counts related to kickbacks.
As a result of these fraudulent activities, Medicare was billed over $24 million, with more than $2.1 million paid out to the laboratories including expensive cancer genetic tests.
Texas doctor sentenced to 10 years for $70 million fraud
In a similar case, in January 2025, a Texan doctor was sentenced to 10 years in prison and ordered to pay over $26 million in restitution. He was found guilty of prescribing durable medical equipment and cancer genetic testing for over 13,000 beneficiaries without seeing, speaking to, or treating the patients.
His actions led to more than $70 million in fraudulent Medicare claims, of which he personally profited $475,000.
