USPS worker convicted of fraud; stealing $1.6 million in checks

A former U.S. Postal Service worker has been convicted of stealing approximately $1.6 million in checks to fund a luxurious lifestyle.

Between December 2020 and March 2023, he executed a scheme to steal both U.S. treasury and private party checks from the mail that he was tasked with delivering. Nearly 100 checks were either altered or falsely endorsed before being deposited into bank accounts under his control and in some instances, he replaced the rightful payee’s name with his own. At least 90 of these checks were from the U.S. Treasury and included tax refunds.

The investigation began in January 2024, after a postal worker reported that their U.S. Treasury Check had been stolen from the mail and deposited into another account. Around the same time, law enforcement had also identified five treasury checks that had been fraudulently deposited into an account at TD bank.

He was eventually caught when investigators acquired CCTV footage capturing the individual depositing the stolen checks into his accounts – on some occasions still in his postal uniform.

At trial, the jury found him guilty of conspiracy to commit mail theft, bank fraud, theft of mail and engaging in a monetary transaction in property derived from specified unlawful activity.
